GLENMORANGIE The Dutach Legends

Inspired by King James IV's annual pilgrimage to the shrine of St Duthac and the home of Glenmorangie, celebrated Director of Whisky Creation and Distilling, Dr Bill Lumsden, set out to create a whisky fit for a King.

To a selection of single malt aged in ex-bourbon casks, Dr Bill carefully married two parcels of spirit finished in casks representing the King's often contrasting nature.

The first, appropriately finished in casks from the King of Sherries - Pedro Ximénez, to add a layer of rich sweetness exemplifying the King's tempered, diplomatic

side. The second, finished in charred virgin oak casks, providing an intense, spicy side embodying the King’s fiery, impulsive nature.

TASTING NOTES

COLOR: Glenmorangie The Dutchess Legends presents a deep, almost opulent amber colour with golden highlights that give the sensation of a liquid jewel in the glass. Its bright, clear appearance invites contemplation, with a soft sheen that reveals the complexity of maturation in red wine casks. As the liquid moves slowly, a slight viscosity can be noticed, indicating its silky, well-structured body.

NOSE: As you bring the glass closer, the first olfactory contact is surprisingly enveloping and delicate. Initial notes of ripe red fruits such as black cherries, raspberries and plums are perceived, combined with a soft molasses that adds a touch of velvety sweetness. Over time, the red wine notes, enriched by the influence of the casks, unfold, displaying a complexity of dried fruits and a slight earthy touch. Subtle yet present toasted wood brings aromatic depth, while a delicate whisper of vanilla and spices such as cinnamon and clove emerge, further elevating the complexity. As a whole, the nose is rich and multifaceted, offering new layers with each inhale.

TASTE: Upon first sip, the whisky unfolds with a surprisingly smooth yet characterful texture. The entry is velvety, with a perfect blend of ripe fruits such as red plum and blackberry, which are balanced by a subtle hint of caramelized apple. As the whisky opens up on the palate, deeper notes of dark chocolate, nutmeg and a delicate aftertaste of roasted coffee emerge, coming from contact with the wood. The red wine influence, visible on the nose, merges here in an elegant embrace of tannins, which bring a robust but not dominant structure. The fruit profile remains vibrant, while the oak contributes a well-balanced smoothness and a hint of spice that never overwhelms the senses. On the aftertaste, the whisky leaves a silky sensation that lingers, with echoes of dried fruit, cocoa and a final whisper of lightly smoky oak. The complexity of The Dutchess Legends is revealed with each sip, displaying a refined maturity and depth that invites further exploration of its layers.
