Crafted in 1992 by Booker Noe as part of the Small Batch collection, Basil Hayden introduced a more subtle side of bourbon compared to its counterparts.
This style of bourbon was inspired by 1792 whiskey pioneer Meredith Basil Hayden, Sr., a rye farmer from Maryland who moved to Kentucky and began distilling. He chose to distill his bourbon with a higher percentage of rye, and Booker set out to create a similar high-rye mash bill that would offer the same refined, approachable taste profile.
Today, this bourbon stands as a tribute to Meredith Basil Hayden, Sr.’s high-rye mash bill ingenuity, as well as to Booker Noe, a true innovator who sought to welcome new drinkers into whiskey.
TASTING NOTES
COLOR: A deep gold with amber tints that reflects a warm light, evoking the essence of an autumn afternoon. The liquid flows smoothly, displaying a luminosity that invites you to immerse yourself in its sensorial world.
NOSE: As the glass approaches, a first wave of sweet and spicy aromas is released, giving way to a unique complexity. Creamy vanilla blends with the warm touch of caramel, while rye appears in the background, adding a slight spiciness that is refreshing and enveloping. After a moment of rest, subtle notes of toasted nuts and a light touch of aged wood emerge, creating a welcoming sensation. It is an aromatic profile that perfectly balances soft and spicy, inviting deeper exploration.
TASTE: Upon taking the first sip, the Bourbon unfolds with remarkable smoothness, caressing the palate with a silky texture that at the same time maintains a robust structure. The initial taste is sweet, with hints of caramel and vanilla, but the presence of rye is immediately felt, bringing a delicate spice that blends with notes of white pepper. The combination of sweetness and spice results in a layered experience, where the balance between flavours remains impeccable. As the whisky settles on the palate, subtle notes of wood and nuts emerge, with a hint of bitter cocoa giving an interesting twist to the profile. The finish is long, leaving a warm sensation and a spicy aftertaste, with a slight lingering pepper that invites further enjoyment.
