The legendary still's purifier, responsible for Ardbeg's exalted balance, is nowhere to be seen. And this whisky - Ardbeg Heavy Vapours - is the consequence.
The familiar harmony between peat and floral fruitiness has been broken. What has emerged are darker, untamed flavours and notes, building up and filling the senses.
It is an ominous dram of dramatic, aromatic pungency. Strong vapours will rise.
TASTING NOTES
COLOUR: Pale straw.
NOSE: The smoke rises with a cloying sweetness. Intense, penetrating and aromatic, a distinctive barnyard smell drifts along with a crisp aroma, like creasote or tarred rope. A splash of water alters the vapours and dark chocolate cream appears, mixed with a ribbon of smoked artichoke.
MOUTH: Ardbeg's darkest, most untamed flavours and notes have emerged. A burst of bittersweet flavour emerges, disturbing the ash charcoal dust and casting a haze of cardamom, mint and coffee beans. Clouds of dark chocolate and minty eucalyptus roll in, obscuring the fruity and floral notes normally found at the heart of Ardbeg. On the palate float wisps of aniseed twists, cinnamon balls and antiseptic pastilles.
FINISH: The aftertaste is long and bold, with an almost anaesthetic sensation.
