In honor of the Pictish king for whom Tarlogie Wood is said to be named, Dr. Bill Lumsden, Whisky's celebrated Director of Creation and Distilling, set out to create a whiskey inspired by the ancient forest that has safeguarded our precious water source since 1843.
Evoking the botanical aromas of a summer morning walk in the forest, Dr. Bill chose a parcel of spirit that had matured in ex-bourbon casks, creating a backbone of the classic Glenmorangie house style of light citrus and sweet florals. To complement this, it was married with a parcel of pure malt aged in virgin oak casks, crafted from slow-grown American white oak and similar to those used in the acclaimed Glenmorangie Ealanta - to reflect the purity and tranquility of the forest. Elegantly integrating the classic floral style of the house, the new oak spirit infuses deep, sweet flavors and a gentle spiciness, with a lingering coconut note reminiscent of gorse blossoms in the spring sunshine.
TASTING NOTES
COLOR: The whisky glides into the glass in a deep amber hue, evoking the golden hues of a sunset over the Scottish hills. Its brilliant clarity and fluid appearance denote a smooth, refined texture, a visual promise of the elegance to be found in every sip.
NOSE: The initial fragrance is like a fresh breeze, bringing with it the sweetness of wild flowers and the softness of liquid honey. With each breath, a subtle layer of fresh fruits unfolds, especially apple and peach, blending with a light tropical essence of ripe pineapple and banana. A delicate hint of vanilla brings an enveloping creaminess, while a soft sigh of spices, such as freshly grated ginger and nutmeg, adds a complexity that invites further exploration. As the whisky opens, small notes of almond shell and a hint of toast emerge, as a nod to the maturation process in select casks.
TASTE: At first sip, Glenmorangie The Tarlogan displays an enveloping smoothness that unfolds with unexpected depth. The texture is velvety, almost silky, while the flavour begins with a juicy mix of ripe fruits, such as pears and plums, which combine with the creaminess of vanilla and a hint of caramel. As the whisky moves across the palate, spicy notes of cinnamon and clove intertwine with a faint aftertaste of dark cocoa, lending a pleasing complexity. The influence of oak is evident, but on a delicate level: it is not overwhelming, but offers an earthy and slightly smoky touch that is perfectly balanced with the fruity sweetness. The finish is long and smooth, with a slight lingering of candied fruit and a spicy warmth that invites another sip.
