The ninth annual release in our acclaimed Private Edition series, Glenmorangie Spìos is the first Glenmorangie ever to be fully matured in American ex-rye whiskey casks. Full-bodied and savoury, its innovative character was inspired by the bygone elegance of America’s golden whiskey era, when American rye whiskey was fêted in the country’s most prestigious saloons. Glenmorangie Spìos (Scots Gaelic for ‘spice’ and pronounced ‘spee-oss’) recalls the spirit’s elegant past, inviting rye’s rare notes of cinnamon and clove to shine through in the Highland Distillery’s uniquely smooth spirit, for a single malt whisky of sophistication and subtle spice.
TASTING NOTES
COLOR: Bright gold with intense amber nuances, this whisky exhibits a warm, deep hue that captures the light with elegance. On its surface, the density seems to promise a rich, enveloping texture, inviting curiosity before the first taste. It is a colour that reflects the complexity of its maturation process, combining the luminosity of distillation with the subtle touch of wood.
NOSE: On the nose, Glenmorangie Spios No. 9 opens with a warm invitation of toasted nuts, with a mix of almonds and walnuts that quickly gives way to a layer of enveloping spices. Notes of fresh cinnamon, nutmeg and a hint of white pepper appear, evoking a sense of depth. As the whisky breathes, more subtle complexities emerge: a light floral fragrance reminiscent of wild flowers and a delicate trace of vanilla and caramel. This aromatic ensemble is completed by a touch of ripe red fruits, such as cherries and blackberries, which bring freshness and balance to the olfactory profile.
TASTE: Upon tasting, Spios No. 9 presents itself with a powerful yet refined entry, with a surprisingly smooth and creamy texture that fills the palate. The rye influence is clear, with spicy flavors reminiscent of a hint of black pepper, anise and a faint trace of ginger, which blend harmoniously with the initial sweetness of vanilla and honey. Dried fruits, such as prunes and raisins, add a layer of complexity, while oak provides a solid structure and a delicate drying touch. As it develops in the mouth, the spicy notes intensify, balanced by an aftertaste evoking a hint of dark cocoa and a subtle hint of candied fruit. The finish is long, warm and spicy, leaving a pleasant persistence on the palate, with a sensation of softness that invites another sip.
