Inspired by the unique natural environment that surrounds him Dr. Bill Lumsden, Director of Distilling and Distilling Creation and Whisky Creation, set out to encapsulate the essence of the Firth in a special limited edition release.
To represent the rugged, windswept coastline, Dr. Bill created a robust, strong, strong, strong and strong spirit.
created a stout, extra matured or "finished in ammoniated sherry butts," to represent the rugged, windswept coastline.
in amontillado sherry butts in one of our traditional maceration cellars. The new spirit, with its peaty undercurrent, adds an unexpected dimension of distant sweet and smoky apples, complemented by vibrant, nutty sweet flavors layered over the rich, warm caramel and dried fruit that only an Amontillado wood
can impart.
To reflect the tranquility of the Firth, when Tarbat Ness, some 16 miles away, can be seen from the distillery, Dr. Bill crafted an elegant spirit using ex-bourbon American white oak casks to bring layers of floral, vanilla and citrus notes, reflective of the Glenmorangie house and contributing to the refinement of Glenmorangie Dornoch.
The balance of these two plots creates a malt whiskey that extends the beautiful environment in which Glenmorangie is born. It has matured slowly in the 19th century on damp earth soils, protected by stone walls from the banks of the Dornoch Firth, which is just a few meters away. The salty waters help maintain a constant temperature throughout the seasons and offer shelter from North Sea storms - perfect conditions for maturing our complex and elegant malt whiskies.
Glenmorangie Dornoch is inspired by our sense of place, a celebration of the distillery's distinctive location. The Dornoch Firth is not only renowned for its vital marine habitats, but is deeply rooted in the 170-year history of our distillery, which relies on natural resources to craft our extraordinary malt whiskies.
