A.H. RIISE X.O. "Sauternes Cask"

There is something special about an extra old (XO) rum and A.H. Ri- ise XO Sauternes Cask Rum is no exception. However, this is not just an ordinary well-aged rum. Thanks to the additional time the re-casked A.H. Riise XO Rum has spent maturing in old Sauternes oak casks sourced from some of the finest vineyards in the Sauternes region near Bordeaux in France, something remarkable happens.

Sauternes is a sweet white wine and, over time, this sweetness that is deep- ly ingrained in the oak casks blends with the XO rum to impart a whol- ly unique and delicate backdrop to what is already a flavour-rich rum. 

A.H. Riise XO Sauternes Cask Rum comprises a blend of rums which all have their origins in the Caribbean, the home of the original phar- macy or ‘apotek’ where A.H. Riise first began rum production. Today’s A.H. Riise rums reflect the long history of the brand, respecting the traditional methods of producing XO rums. Our A.H. Riise XO Sauternes Cask Rum is only ever produced in small batches as this is definitely a rum where quality is more important than quantity.

TASTING NOTES

COLOR: When looking at this rum in a glass, we are greeted with an intense and bright amber tone, almost like old gold, illuminated by golden reflections that capture the light with elegance. Its colour is deep, but at the same time radiant, inviting a slow contemplation before bringing it to the nose. Its clarity is remarkable, suggesting careful distillation and a meticulous ageing process.

NOSE: The first encounter with the nose is delicate and attractive. An initial layer of fruity aromas unfolds, mainly of ripe fruits such as peach, apricot and a slight sensation of dried figs, evoking a feeling of freshness and natural sweetness. As the fragrance develops, notes of golden honey and a slight floral touch are added, reminiscent of white flowers and jasmine, which bring an enveloping aromatic subtlety. The influence of the Sauternes casks is evident with a hint of vanilla, like a soft touch of luxury that is combined with a subtle spicy background, where notes of cinnamon and nutmeg can be sensed. This set of aromas is complex and pleasant, maintaining a harmony that invites further exploration.
TASTE: On the palate, the A.H. RIISE X.O. "Sauternes Cask" presents with a soft and velvety entrance, with a silky texture that completely envelops the mouth. The initial sweetness of ripe fruits such as pineapple and mango is mixed with the warmth of the wood, which reveals a subtle touch of nuts and a pleasant note of caramel. As the rum moves across the palate, additional layers of more complex flavors emerge, with a slight influence of the Sauternes casks that provides a refined and elegant sweetness, without being cloying. The combination of toasted walnut, cocoa and warm spices such as cinnamon and a touch of clove is felt in an enveloping way, lengthening the aftertaste with a persistence that is both smooth and enveloping. The structure of the rum is balanced and sophisticated, leaving a lingering taste sensation that invites a second sip.
