A legend in history. The story goes that on 19 April 1870 , a stockbroker, caught up in a discussion with colleagues whilst in the Carpano wine shop about the increase in share prices on that day – one and a half points – ordered his usual Carpano vermouth but asked for the barman to add half a measure of bitter, using the regional expression “Punt e Mes”. The drink immediately became popular as an aperitif before lunch.
TASTING NOTES
COLOR: Its appearance is that of a deep, warm red, with reflections reminiscent of the ripest ruby. This vermouth has a rich and enveloping hue, with a dense visual texture that suggests complexity. When tilting the glass, the light seems to stop on its surface, revealing a subtle opacity that invites you to explore beyond your first impression.
NOSE: The nose of Punt e Mes is a torrent of nuances that awaken the senses in an intriguing way. In the foreground, herbaceous notes are perceived that intertwine with a light touch of fresh citrus, like a light breeze. As the fragrance settles, spices emerge, with cloves and cinnamon standing out, followed by subtle reminiscences of dark caramel and toasted nuts, such as almonds and hazelnuts. A bitter note, coming from quinine, appears in the background, creating a deep base that gives character and complexity to the olfactory experience. Each inhalation reveals a new layer, showcasing the elegance and sophistication of this vermouth.
TASTE: On the palate, Punt e Mes unfolds with a smooth entry, but quickly makes itself known for its firm structure. The initial sweetness, reminiscent of brown sugar or honey, is balanced by an enveloping and subtle bitterness, which gains presence as it develops. The flavour is robust, but not aggressive, and notes of herbs and spices are felt in the background, offering a rich complexity that continues to evolve. Quinine and angelica root provide an earthy and slightly bitter touch that is balanced by hints of cocoa, vanilla and a slight woody aftertaste. The finish is long, elegant and persistent, leaving a sensation of freshness and a delicate bitterness that invites another sip, prolonging the experience.
